How to get to Bucaneros Hotel and Suites, Isla Mujeres?

 

From the Cancun airport: 15 minutes by taxi or collective service to the Maritime Terminal of Puerto Juarez.

Boarding the ferry to Isla Mujeres, a 20-minute journey crossing the turquoise waters, you will reach Isla Mujeres.

Enter the narrow streets of Isla towards Hidalgo Ave. (80m) and walk left towards North Beach for another 80 meters. The Hotel will be on your left.

Boat Schedule

“Isla,” as the local people call it, has its first news dated in 564-1516 BC. It was a Mayan province, called Ekab.

One of the four Mayan provinces or territories formed in the now State of Quintana Roo and was also the location of Ixchel’s sanctuary, the goddess of the moon, happiness, medicine, and abundance, among others.

Bucaneros Hotel & Suites is a family-runed 20-room hotel located in the heart of the city center, on Hidalgo Ave. just 8 minutes away from the famous North Beach. You will be very close to most of the things you may need during your stay, many shops and a variety of restaurants are on this street too.
It’s also only two blocks away from the main city square, where most of the events take place through the Year, as well as a grocery store and a pharmacy (open 24 hours).

Beach Clubs

Club Zama: it is a club open to the public in general located in the area of sac-bajo, has facilities and complete service of bathrooms, pool, sun loungers, restaurant, bar, dock. (can be arrived by boat and road). It is very popular not only as a beach club but also for social events and weddings. It has no cover, only the consumption at the place.

Captain Dulche: it is a beach club open to the public, the largest of the island. Has complete restaurant facilities, a wood deck with bar, stilt houses with sun loungers on the sea, showers, below the restaurant there is a nautical museum dedicated to the nautical history of the island and the development of the facilities of the naval area, there is a cost to access the museum. Access to the beach club is free with minimum consumption. You can access by road or boat.

Beaches

Playa Lancheros: also known as the house of tikinxic. Is one of the most popular. Is in the middle point of the island, very close to Hacienda Mundaca. It is very famous for its fish in the different styles of spices. The place is available for events like weddings; the access is free and on consumption, with facilities on the sea with parking.

Playa Tiburon Ballena: it is in the area of sac – bajo. It is a more private club with restaurant, bathrooms, showers, and beach activities like volleyball. Free access on consumption.

Playa Norte: if you come from the central park, you will find Playa Norte within 5 blocks. It is, according to tripadvisor, one of Mexico´s most beautiful crystal-clear waters with different varieties of blue color. It is fully open to the public. There are different bars and restaurants along the beach, each establishment offers services like bathrooms, showers, towels, umbrellas.

Playa Centro: as its name indicates, it is in the center of the island but facing Cancun. It is located from Playa Norte to Matamoros street, where the docks start. It is a beautiful beach with Different bars, sun loungers, etc.

Parks

*Parque El Pescador: Recently enabled a water park with slides, basketball, and volleyball. 2 scenarios for shows, kayaks, bathrooms, lockers, and towels.

*Parque de Los Sueños: It a smaller park with various pools; it has more charm with two slides: one for children and another for adults. It offers a couple´s bar, kayaks, snorkel, climbing wall.

* Hacienda Mundaca: It is an open space reserve on the island. Fermin Mundaca Marechaga was a Spanish who arrived at the island in 1860 and helped the governor of Yucatan, Miguel Barbachano, to take the Mayan rebels that had captured after the War of the Castes. Sending them, as slaves, to Cuba to die in cane plantations. And as a prize, he was given that open space reserve full of gardens to live in his retirement. His tomb can be visited in the City´s center cemetery in the corner of Juárez and López Mateos. Currently, it is a park with native plants with a museum area.

* Mirador Punta Sur: It is in the extreme south of Isla Mujeres. It rises almost eight meters from sea level; this allows a panoramic view of the coasts. Here is the place where the first rays of the sun touch ground in all Mexico. This is why every end of the year locals and visitors gather to receive the first rays of the new year

It has a lighthouse, restaurants, parking, viewpoint, sculptures, an authentic Mayan temple dedicated to the god of fertility, a statue of Ixchel. Also, at the end of the ground area, some stairs allow you to descend where the waves crash, the perfect place for taking photos. Recovery fee of 40 pesos

* Tortugranja: A small facility managed by the municipal, state, and the federal government. They carry out a protection scheme for three species of local turtles, and along with many different volunteer groups they carry out patrolling in the marina.

All the eggs from every nest are recovered to get moved into a new nest in the Tortugranja to protect them. The turtles are White and Carey; when they are born, they are taken to the small aquarium for observation, and after a few time, after some time they are ready released. As part of the education to young people to protect the turtles, last year, 80 thousand turtles were released. At the aquarium, you can also find local fishes and seahorses, sponges, crabs, sea urchins, and sea worms. Bathrooms, a dock, and a small shop are some of the services they offer.

There are bigger turtle tanks, and it is an area that is preserved for reproduction or when they are hurt. It has an entrance fee of 40 pesos per person.

Tours

– Snorkel: this a boat tour that includes a stop in the “Farito Islet” and also a visit to Musa (Underwater Museum), it takes 3 hours and it can include food and drinks.

– Whaleshark Tour: this a seasonal activity and is only available from June to the mid September. The whale shark is the largest fish in the world; they visit the nearby coast from Holbox, Contoy, and Isla Mujeres to feed on different species like plankton and zooplankton. Includes  a stop nearby reef for snorkeling at the end of the tour.

Be sure to look for a supplier with SEMARNAT´S permit to ensure a better experience. The tour lasts from 8 am to 2 pm.

– Isla Contoy: Also known as Isla Pajaros. It is a national reserve, holds many bird species, reptils, rays, as many other animals. It is a top-rated tour and available for the most of the year, lasts from 8 am to 5 pm, offers ecological facilities, museum, beach area, walking paths on the island for bird observation, viewpoints. The gastronomic suggestion is fish, ceviche, and salads.

-Diving with sailfish: Our newest tour, available from December to June. Every year, plankton arrives at the north coasts of Q.Roo, accompanied by sardines that feed on the plankton and behind them, arrive the beautiful and speedy fish sail which may be admired through a specialized diving tour that will allow you to safely observe the hunting strategies and teamwork that they carry out to feed.

Dates of significant tourist interest

* It is essential to know if the times of our trip are in the middle of festivities, this is interesting to know to complement our experience on the island

Carnival: At the end of February: The islanders prepare dance groups called “comparsas” for a party full of colors, music, and joy for the next 5 days. Plus, there´s live music from regional bands and the celebration will end with the traditional Juan Carnaval´s lecture.

Sports fishing tournament: (Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña), the most important on the island and the second of the state after Cozumel. It is always carried on the 3rd weekend of May.

Foundation of the island: For around ten days in the middle of August. Isla Mujeres was founded on August 17, 1850. There are gastronomic samples, bullfights, fairs, concerts and more, during the celebration.

Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre: On the first weekend of September, representatives of island navigators and fishers participate on a nautical procession, where all-size boats carry people to Contoy to gather at the chapel. Families enjoy the beach, and it’s free.

The independence day parties: are a grand celebration in the municipal plaza where there are concerts and fireworks. The streets are decorated, plus, many establishments offer promotions during these dates.

The day of the dead: With several cultural activities, some musical events allusive to the day of the dead, and also many establishments put their offerings; it is a unique date for Mexicans.

Immaculate Conception: It begins in November and concludes on December 8. It is Isla Mujeres’ patroness. The processions are performed by fishermen, children, teachers, ladies of the third age, who walk around with the virgin through the streets with images and floral offers. There are parties, folklore dances, bullfights, and Mexican games like the lottery, etc.

Virgen de Guadalupe: It is a chapel near the Salina Chica colony. The only church that has a sea view which makes it popular for weddings.

Christmas: is peak season on the island, and all streets are full of tourists. Perfect for admiring the tallest Christmas tree.

New Year’s Eve: The greatest party of the year! A large party where fireworks and bands play all night, tables on the plaza, with party kits, gastronomic area, and of course, drinks.
